Wigan midfielder Ben Watson has urged his side to do everything within their powers to preserve their Premier League status this season.
The 24-year-old scored the first goal in Wigan's great comeback against Arsenal at the weekend, a win which moved them seven points clear of the drop zone.
Watson was quick to praise his side's character and spirit after they were written off after going two goals down.
That win means Wigan are now very close to securing their Premier League status for next season, and they could get even closer with games against relegation-threatened West Ham and Hull left in the campaign. The online odds now suggest they should stay up.
"We're at West Ham this weekend, which is another massive game for us, and if we can get a result there then we'll be safe," Watson said.
"This club needs to stay in the Premier League. We're almost there."
After the Arsenal game Wigan boss Roberto Martinez said he was "extremely proud" of his players for the belief they showed and the performances they have put in to record victories over Chelsea and Liverpool this season.
Meanwhile, Wigan midfielder Charles N'Zogiba could feature for England in the World Cup.
He has never played for France and now qualifies for British citizenship.
However, England, who are currently third favourites in the World Cup 2010 odds, are unlikely to call on the player. |
