The Champions League finalists are now six points clear of Real Madrid with two games to go, with their better head-to-head record meaning Jose Mourinho’s men cannot finish in 1st place.
The title has been Barcelona’s for a while now though, those placing free bets on Spanish football will tell you that. Real Madrid had the chance to put some pressure on when the two teams met in the league a couple of weeks ago, but a draw in that game was enough for Barca to maintain their comfortable lead.
They will be perhaps annoyed that they didn’t seal the title with a win, but the point at Levante was enough for them to celebrate. They did lead through Seydou Keita, but Felipe Caicedo equalised for the hosts and that is the way it stayed.
They have now won the league in five of the last seven seasons, 21 times overall. They are certainly the team to beat in Spain these days and they show no sign of decreasing their dominance.
Speaking after securing the title, manager Pep Guardiola said: “Winning the league has been extremely tough and we are very pleased.”
It is easy to see why they have won the league too. Of course their impressive and unique style of play has Champions written all over it, but a look at the statistics from the season tells its own story.
The Catalan club have only conceded 20 goals and scored 92 times. They have scored less frequently in recent weeks with Guardiola putting this down to their ‘inhuman schedule’, but this doesn’t take anything away from the impressive record of their defence and attack.
Attention can now turn to the Champions League final for Guardiola’s men. They take on Manchester United at the end of the month and will be determined to follow up domestic success with being crowed Champions of Europe.
Those placing a free bet on this contest will find it a tough one to call, but with the Champions of England meeting the Champions of Spain, it is sure to be a fantastic occasion on the hallowed turf of Wembley. |
