With less than a year to go until England jet out to Poland and Ukraine to compete in the Euro 2012 Championships, many fans will be beginning to wonder whether The Three Lions' time has finally come.
Since the heroics of 1966 when Alf Ramsey guided the national team to World Cup glory, there has been nothing for fans to boast about.
Why then, can a team so full of world-class talent not have won anything in nearly 50 years?
It is a question that usually seems to be asked in the aftermath of a World Cup or European Championship defeat.
For years England have had some of the finest players in world football – the stars of today have been heralded as a 'golden generation'.
It is rare though, to see those players ever perform in an England shirt to the same impeccable standards they do every week in the Premier League.
Uruguay showed the world what it takes to win a major international tournament last week, by overcoming the likes of Brazil and Argentina to clinch the Copa America trophy.
However, it was not superstar players that won them the competition. It was a sense of camaraderie, team chemistry and understanding.
When celebrating the win, the players looked united – they almost looked as though they loved one another.
You don't get the same impression with England.
It is easy to use the argument that there are too many over-inflated egos in the dressing room, but that can hardly be the only reason the Euro 2012 odds aren’t backing England.
Looking at the Spanish team, a lot of them seem to have a great deal of self-love. They're world champions, though.
Something just needs to click for England, and many supporters will be hoping that this will be their year.
Euro 2012 betting pundits will agree that there is a wealth of talent in the squad, a mixture of youth and experience, flair and grit. If Fabio Capello can find the right formula, maybe, just maybe, England could break that hoodoo that has been hanging over them for too long now. |
