Prior to the game, Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere was the talk of the town. Team-mates at both club and national level have joined in with the Italian in promoting the 19-year-old as England’s next saviour – usually a sure-fire way to ensure a player’s downfall.
Describing him as “important for the future” and comparing him to Chelsea and France legend Claude Makelele, the Italian was joined by Samir Nasri, Frank Lampard and Theo Walcott in their adulation for the talented youngster.
Wilshere managed to live up to his billing In England’s 2-1 victory over Denmark last night, impressing in a defensive role alongside Captain Frank Lampard. Although sports betting markets would have installed England as favourites, Denmark proved to be tough opponents and took the lead early on before goals from Villa pair Darren Bent and Ashley Young sealed the game for England.
His deft touches and swift movement out of defensive positions and into attack added a layer of class to an England side previously accused of lacking finesse. In only his second cap and his first start, the man Arsene Wenger singled out for fame from a young age has set tongues wagging.
Capello was suitably impressed with him saying: “He played very well. He played with confidence, passed a lot of good balls and won back possession”
“It's not easy for a player so young on a (full) debut to play at this level. It was a good performance.”
The Italian is not one to be so free and easy with praise, and for him to be so glowing about the Arsenal youngster says a lot about how highly he rates him.
However, Wilshere did face competition for the best youngster on display as young Dane Christian Erikson showed why he was one of the hottest properties in European football.
AC Milan and Liverpool are said to keen on him and it was not difficult to see why as he ghosted in and out of the space between England’s defence and midfield. His delicious cross for Daniel Agger’s goal was a lesson in how to torment defenders and he continued in the same manner throughout the game.
Wilshere is the future of English football and if he continues in the manner he did against Denmark, England will have a World Class player on their hands.
Capello may have heaped the praise on him before and after, but the young Gunner showed he is more than ready for the international stage. |
