He is a Premier League legend. One of the finest players to grace a football pitch since the league’s inauguration, and once upon a time, most probably the top player in the world game as far as many looking at casinos online are concerned. Thierry Henry is all set to return to English football with his beloved Arsenal when the transfer window officially opens in January. The New York Red Bulls, his current employers, have given the green light for him to return to the Emirates Stadium – a chance that Arsene Wenger has been more than happy to take. At 34 years of age, it is unlikely that fans will get to relive some of the great moments that Henry brought to the Premier League, but who’s to say that he will not chip in with a goal or two over the next couple of months. This all comes at the ideal time for Arsenal, who will be losing the likes of Marouane Chamakh and Gervinho to the African Cup of Nations in the New Year. The option to bring back a fans favourite to fill in during their absence seems irresistible. Even for the neutral observer this is exciting. Amongst all the hype, however, there is one key issue that does raise quite a bit of concern for Arsenal fans here. In signing Henry on loan, you cannot help but notice how much of a temporary solution to a permanent problem this really is. Are Arsenal just papering over the cracks here? Aside from Robin Van Persie, there is no striker who is providing goals for the Gunners at the moment. In fact the scoring records of Chamakh, Gervinho and others is nothing short of embarrassing. Some fans have suggested that Wenger is afraid to spend big money on a striker, they say he is scared to take the risk. Fair enough too, look at the likes of Fernando Torres and Andy Carroll who have proved to be nothing more than big money flops for Chelsea and Liverpool. On the other hand, look at Sergio Aguero – seemingly doing the business for Manchester City week in, week out. It all goes to prove that there are players out there who have the capability of coming to the Premier League, surrounded by much hype, and deliver. The amount of money that Arsenal have generated just from playing their football at the new Emirates Stadium would be enough to fund a big money signing. It may well go against all of Arsene Wenger’s principles, but perhaps it is time to splash out L30-40 million on a forward. It will be great if Robin Van Persie stays, but he desperately needs someone of his impeccably high standards to play alongside. It is certainly something to think about. But for now, Thierry Henry is back, and that in itself is one hell of a treat we have to look forward to now. |
