Mancini: Derby win means nothing now

Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini insists his players have already forgotten about their 6-1 hammering of local rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford last weekend, and are keen to go about establish a lead at the top of the Premier League that will help the win their first league crown since 1976.

City opened up a five point lead at the top of the table with their biggest derby win in 85 years, and are now the only side that remain unbeaten after nine games of the new season, but Mancini insists he and his side have put their stunning win behind them and are concentrating on what lies ahead of them in the title race.

“The feeling is good but the game is in the past now, it is history, finished. We have to focus on Wolves. For me it is better to win six derbies 1-0 than one 6-1.”

"I enjoy it always, being Manchester City manager. I think we are working very well but if we want to become a top team for the next 20 years we cannot be happy only because we beat United 6-1. It is not important.”

"The supporters are happy, very happy, but for us we play every three days and work every day. We know our job and we understand we should stay with our feet on the floor.'' He added City backed up their win at Old Trafford with an impressive 5-2 win over Wolves in the Carling Cup to reach the quarter finals, with Mancini keen to add more silverware after last season’s FA Cup triumph.

Comparisons between City and Arsenal’s 2003/04 league winning side, dubbed the Invincibles after going the entire league season unbeaten, thanks to their immaculate start, but the Italian boss isn’t getting too carried away with the plaudits coming his way.

"That is not important, I think there are four or five teams that can win the title. At this moment we are top but the table can change every game. The season is long. From after the next international break we play every three days for six months. It will be very difficult.'' He commented.
