When the football season finished, much of the attention turned to the summer spending of Premier League clubs. Given their wealth, Manchester City were receiving particular attention as they prepare for their first season in the Champions League.
However, the Eastlands club haven’t made any new signings as yet with around six weeks to go before the new season starts. In fact, much of the speculation has been centered around players leaving the club – Carlos Tevez in particular.
Roberto Mancini has revealed that he is after three new recruits before the season begins though, so things could be starting to swing into action.
As ever in the transfer market, once one significant signing is made, many more will follow. If City spend big on a new player, it might mean a couple more follow quickly. There will then be some personnel moving on as well.
With regards to who the three players likely to be pulling on the Manchester City away shirt next season, there are some names being mentioned.
The first name on the list is Fiorentina midfielder Alessio Cerci. A fee of around L7m is expected to be enough for the 23-year-old winger. Then there is Partizan Belgrade defender Stefan Savic who is valued at a similar price to Cerci.
Both of these players are not as well known as previous Manchester City signings, so it seems as though Mancini isn’t fussed about making a marquee signing this summer.
Instead, he wants good, young and hard-working players that will add something to his exciting squad.
As for the final name on the wanted list for now, it appears the Italian is keen on AZ Alkmaar keeper Sergio Romero to act as competition for Joe Hart should Shay Given move on as expected this summer.
The Argentina international is a very highly-rated keeper and it would be an interesting move for him and Man City if it goes ahead. One of Hart or Romero would have to sit on the bench most weeks and neither would be too content with this.
Overall, it is set to be a busy few weeks for Manchester City in the transfer market.
After securing their first major trophy since the new owners came in last season, the next campaign is massively significant for their progress so they need to spend wisely and create a squad capable of pushing onto the next level. |
