Arsenal youngster Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain could be on the verge of an England call up according to reports in the press today, with Three Lions boss Fabio Capello reportedly set to give the young winger his first cap ahead of the European Championships over the summer with the view of including him in his final squad for the competition. The youngster, who previously joked he would have to buy Euro 2012 tickets rather than be there with England, stole the show for Arsenal as he teed up Robin Van Persie for the Gunners equaliser against Manchester United on Sunday, before Danny Welbeck scored a second-half winner for Sir Alex Ferguson’s side. The game marked the former Southampton man’s first start for the Gunners, and his substitution for Andrey Arshavin in the second half was greeted by a chorus of boos from the Emirates Stadium crowd. Now Fabio Capello looks set to call Oxlade-Chamberlain, son of former England international MarkChamberlain, to the senior squad, having admitted he was a fan of the precious youngster after England’s friendly win over Sweden back in November. "I have been impressed with him, he is a really interesting player," the Italian said. "He is a good player, who has a lot of quality and is playing at a really high level. "He will be a really interesting player for the next friendly games before the Euros." While an England call beckons for Oxlade-Chamberlain, the youngster moved to defend the actions of manager Arsene Wenger after substituting him during the game against United. Gunners captain Robin Van Persie was caught on camera remonstrating with Wenger at the decision as the crowd vocalised their disagreement. His departure in the second half was indirectly responsible for United re-taking the lead, with his replacement Andrey Arshavin found wanting defensively as Antonio Valencia slipped by him to tee up Welbeck for the winner. Wenger was defiant in his post-match press conference, insisting he did not need to explain his actions after 15 years at the helm with Arsenal, but Oxlade-Chamberlain feels as though the Frenchman’s decision should have been respected. "It was hard not to hear it [the jeers for Wenger], there were a lot of fans," Oxlade-Chamberlain said. "It is always nice to know that the fans enjoyed your performance or whatever but at the end of the day, it's the boss's decision. He's Arsène Wenger, a top-quality manager. He's done a lot for this club so whatever he does and whatever decision he makes towards me and the team, I'll have to respect and I do respect that. "The fans pay to come and watch us so they have the right to have their own opinions and to show their frustration but all we can guarantee is that we're working very hard and we're completely focused on the task in hand. We'll do all we can to try to put it right." |
