Former Real Madrid striker Raul became the leading goal scorer in all European competitions last night after helping Schalke secure a 1-1 draw against Valencia in their Champions League last 16 tie.
Raul equalised for the German side after they had fallen behind from an expert finish from Roberto Solado. The Real Madrid legend broke Valencia’s hearts by scoring against the club in the 2000 Champions League final, and returned to haunt them once again after latching on to Jose Manuel Jurado through ball to equalise after 63 minutes.
The Spanish international moved past A.C Milan striker Filippo Inzaghi 70 goals in all European competitions, having already established himself as the Champions League top scorer with 69 goals, which was formed in 1992. Having made his name wearing many Real Madrid shirts where he won Europe’s premier club competition three times, Raul moved to German side Schalke where he has scored 10 goals in 22 appearances.
Returning to Spain for the first time since his move, it seemed fitting for Raul to move past the Italian legend in the European goal-scoring stakes.
Schalke coach Felix Magath heaped praise on his leading striker, and insisted that despite his age, Raul still has the instinct which saw him become Real Madrid’s record goalscorer. He said: “It was no fluke - that's a genuine goalscorer we are seeing here.
"His marker has to come the long way round and Raul knows it - he knows exactly where he's going to put it. The special thing about him is that he works so much for the team as well.” He added.
Raul’s precious away goal puts the German side in control for the second leg at the Gelsenkirchen stadium on 9th March. |
