With the season nearing the halfway point, the relegation battle is still a long way from finalizing its competitors. There are the three Ws currently occupying the dreaded bottom three, West Ham, Wolves and Wigan. Above that group lie Fulham and Birmingham who have both endured very contrasting campaigns from last season and the football predictions suggest they will continue to struggle.
As well as these five clubs there are also cases for another two or three teams who may be dragged into the battle. Everyone is waiting for Blackpool to start dropping down the table but Ian Holloway’s side have looked a tight enough unit to maybe pull of a miracle and survive this season. Blackburn are currently without a proper manager and the continued uncertainty at the club could seriously affect the team's performances.
West Ham are the unfortunate side propping up the table at the moment but Avram Grant has reportedly been given funds to strengthen his squad in January. If the Londoners can add a couple of new faces as well as the return of injured players already at the club, then there is enough quality at the club to survive. They will need to start picking up some wins soon though, if they are to avoid a gap opening up between themselves and safety.
Wolves look as though they are in a real fight this season if they are to keep their top-flight status. Mick McCarthy’s men pulled off a derby day win at Birmingham in their last game but it was a rare bright spot in a poor season so far. In the club’s next three games over the festive period, they will face both Wigan and West Ham in what can be described as a couple of six pointers and the football betting reflects this.
Wigan have never really had the look of a Premier League team since gaining promotion from the Championship. The serious lack of interest in the club from the local community means matches are regularly attended by less than 15,000 fans. If the club loses any of their key players in January, namely Charles N'Zogbia, then Wigan could be in for a tough second half of the season. |
