Should The FA Leave FIFA?

Date Added: June 03, 2011 09:32:42 PM
Author: Drew Swainston
Category: National Teams: Europe: England

Although the FA is not the greatest example to be held up of a top class organisation, the fact remains that it has finally decided that it cannot sit by and watch on as a corrupt organisation rewards its cronies who are far more interested in lining their pockets with yet more gold than bringing the game closer to the people who should really matter, the fans.

Having unsuccessfully tried to beg FIFA not to allow the coronation of Sepp Blatter until the current corruption scandal ends, the FA is now going to have to make up its mind as to whether it would like to remain part of an organisation that clearly disdains it, or whether it is going to seek the support of nations that matter like Germany and Spain and start to think about creating a breakaway group that can be taken seriously and be regarded as nothing short of a force for good in football. Anyone who has bet on Premier League football will know things have to change.

With countries such as Bahrain and Congo currently pulling the strings far more than England, the country in the world where football is surely the most popular, the decision as to how long the FA is prepared to be pushed around by countries with far less at stake than it will surely also lead to the question regarding how long they are prepared to accept being chastised for pointing out the inadequacies of FIFA. As anyone who has bet on Premier League winner will know, domestically England can go it alone, but internationally is another thing entirely.

Having said all of this, the only way to create change is to work with others, and if the FA wants to improve the governance of world football, it can at present only do that if it remains a part of FIFA.
