Arsene Wenger believes his Arsenal team still have a good chance of winning the Premier League title this year, saying they will fight until it is mathematically impossible to catch Manchester United.
Following last night’s 3-3 draw at North London rivals Tottenham, Arsenal’s fifth draw in their last six games, they now sit six points behind the current league leaders.
It was certainly a fantastic game to watch as far as live football is concerned, but many believe that in throwing away a 3-1 lead last night they have lost any chance of winning the title.
However, with Manchester United still to play, Wenger is determined to keep fighting.
Speaking about how things are shaping up, he said: “Chelsea are now back in the race. Chelsea play Manchester United and Tottenham, but it's down to us. We have to keep our faith and keep battling."
“We're on a 15-game unbeaten run, and no-one else has done that.”
In reality though, the unbeaten run is largely insignificant considering the amount of points they have dropped. They would have been better off had they lost a couple and won a couple over the last 15 games.
Perhaps a more telling statistic is that they have now won just once in their last six Premier League games. This has cast them adrift more than the unbeaten run has kept them in it.
One thing that Wenger is correct on though is that Chelsea are back in the race. They have actually leapfrogged Arsenal into 2nd place after beating Birmingham 3-1 last night and seem to have hit form at just the right time.
Carlo Ancelotti’s men have just a good a chance of winning the title as Arsenal, with a six point deficit and a game against the Red Devils to come.
There is no doubt that United are still favourites to secure 1st place this year, but there will be plenty more twists and turns.
In fact, despite Wenger’s positivity, Chelsea are perhaps more likely to challenge for the title than Arsenal in the final five games. |
